Kansas Teachers of the Year visit Lansing School District on March 4, 2020
The 2020 Kansas District Teachers of the Year from Blue Valley, Ottawa, Paola, and Topeka, as well as the Kansas Board of Education representative, Ms. Janet Waugh, visited the Lansing School District on Wednesday, March 4th to get a tour of each of our schools. Lansing's very own teachers of the year, Mrs. Patti Boe-Cackler and Mrs. Megan Bone, hosted the tours of each school and did an incredible job representing our district.
The group started the day at Lansing Intermediate School and was provided breakfast burritos by Low-n-Slow food stand. They were able to attend the PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diligence, and Excellence) assembly that morning at the intermediate school and helped congratulate the 4th and 5th grade students recognized for excellence. They were presented gifts of artwork created by intermediate students at the end of the assembly.
The next stop was Lansing High School where the group was able to visit Mr. KC Simmons and the broadcasting students. The students helped them create a segment that will be shown on The Roar student broadcast in a few weeks. They then toured the high school, making stops in the natatorium, women's select choir rehearsal, science room aquaponics system, art room, and advanced study room to see the 3-D printer. Lunch was provided in Pride Rock by the high school culinary arts students.
After lunch, the Kansas Teachers of the Year and Ms. Janet Waugh visited Lansing Middle School to hear a presentation about BIST (Behavior Intervention Support Team) by LMS Principal, Mr. Kerry Brungardt.
Their last stop of the day was Lansing Elementary School where Mr. Tim Newton gave them a brief tour of the building. They then got to hear a presentation by Mrs. Hailey McCleary about the upcoming Virtual Reality headsets in the kindergarten classrooms. The headsets will be purchased through a grant by Lansing Educational Foundation in the next few weeks.
Before ending the day, Mrs. Bone and Mrs. Boe-Cackler presented each teacher and Ms. Waugh with City of Lansing swag bags that included tumblers that were personalized by Lion Industries. Lion Industries is run by Mrs. Linda Tekuelve, Mr. Parker Ast, and their high school students. They have a heat press and cricut machine that allows them to make personalized items while learning employability skills.
