Lansing USD469 Honored with KSDE Child Nutrition & Wellness Kansans Can Best Practice Award
Lansing USD469 proudly announces its receipt of the KSDE Child Nutrition & Wellness Kansans Can 2022-23 Best Practice Award and was honored during the State Board of Education Meeting on Tuesday, August 8th, in Topeka, Kansas. Lansing USD469 was selected for this award for outstanding and innovative practices in Child Nutrition & Wellness Programs that support the Kansans CAN vision.
Our Lansing USD469 has a very active wellness committee led by Dr. Jennifer Kolb. The community includes a member of our Board of Education, a representative from food service, our district nurse coordinator, mental health staff, a Special Education representative, a PE teacher, our Director of Communications, students, and community members. The committee sets goals to impact wellness within the Lansing school district, focus on creating a healthier school environment, and incorporate social-emotional wellness into their wellness policies and projects.
Last year, the Health & Wellness Committee held the first district health and wellness fair that included a variety of physical and mental health and wellness providers. Attendees of the event had the opportunity to speak with mental health professionals, eye doctors, and other health professionals. The Lansing PTA also provided a bounce house and hula hoops for participants to exercise while learning how to live a healthier lifestyle.
In addition to the health and wellness fair, the board recognized some of the ways Lansing USD469 has demonstrated its commitment to wellness by:
- Swimming Opportunities: Allowing community members access to the school swimming pool in the mornings, promoting physical activity.
- Community Presentations: Hosting substance-abuse presentations for the community to raise awareness.
- CPR Education: Offering CPR education to freshman students, giving them a chance to become certified.
- Connectedness Check-ins: Conducting quarterly check-ins between staff and students to foster a close-knit school community.
- Student Involvement: Allowing students to plan the elementary-level monthly menu, promoting healthy eating.
- Oral Health Initiatives: Arranging dental presentations and providing oral health goody bags to emphasize oral hygiene.
- Hydration Promotion: Installing water bottle filling stations in all schools to encourage proper hydration.
- Community Outreach: Communicating health and wellness information and resources to the community.
