Fourth-Graders Embark on Eye-Opening Journey Through Cow Eye Dissection (VIDEO)
Fourth-grade students in Mrs. Laurie Holden's class recently had the opportunity to dissect cow eyes, guided by the expertise of local anesthesiologist Dr. Jeanette Lozenski from the KU Med Center. This annual tradition, now in its third year, is the grand finale of the students' immersive Mystery Science Unit on Human Systems.
Under the direction of Dr. Lozenski, the students dove into the anatomy of the eye, gaining an understanding of the complexities they had previously studied in the classroom.
Dr. Lozenski's role goes beyond leading the dissection; she devotes time to discussing potential careers in the science industry with the students. This added dimension broadens their perspectives, encouraging them to consider the vast possibilities within the scientific field.
"It is so exciting to have Dr. Lozenski come in every year for educational outreach from KU Med Center to share her knowledge with my class," said Mrs. Holden. "Not only does she do an outstanding job of leading the dissection, she spends a portion of her time with us talking about careers in the science industry."
Thank you to Dr. Lozenski for sharing her knowledge, and to Mrs. Holden for making this opportunity happen!
