Lansing Educational Foundation holds annual Pride Patrol on September 18th!
The Lansing Educational Foundation (LEF) visited classrooms across the district on Wednesday, September 18th to deliver over-sized checks, chocolates, and flowers to this year's grant recipients. LEF board members; school administrators; Lansing Interim Superintendent, Mr. Dan Wessel, the Lansing School Board President, Mr. Jeff Martin; and high school cheerleaders, Elke Dedeke and Aubrey Penfield, were all in attendance to congratulate and take pictures with the lucky teachers and staff.
Ms. Chris Aus, the President of Lansing Educational Foundation, looks forward to this event every year. "Handing out the grants is the reason we do what we do."
Twenty-nine grants were awarded to forty-five teachers across the district on September 18th, for a total amount of $28,583.77. These grants were funded through the Lansing Educational Foundation's Educate the Pride grant program. Grants are available each school year in the amounts of $500 per teacher, $1,000 for a group of teachers, and one $5,000 grant is awarded for a building, department or group of teachers.
Mrs. Anne Krebs, a science teacher at Lansing High School, received a grant for $493.55 to purchase equipment for the new Introduction to Engineering course being offered. "This Educate the Pride Grant enables the high school to purchase equipment to reinforce some fundamental engineering concepts: simple machines and electronics," said Ms. Krebs. "The equipment allows the students to gain invaluable hands-on experience before applying the concepts to engineering problems. The Introduction to Engineering course is the first course in the newly added Engineering and Applied Mathematics Career and Technical Education Pathway."
Mrs. Christine Bachtel was awarded a grant with a group of counselors and social workers at Lansing Elementary and Intermediate Schools titled "Keeping Our Lion Pride Safe." The grant focuses on teaching the students personal safety and bullying prevention."The Lansing School District has been working hard to meet the social emotional needs of all students in and out of the classroom," said Mrs. Bachtel. "We know this is the foundation in which optimal learning and success will occur. Receiving this grant allows the counselors to support our students with skills to address bullying and personal safety in PreK-5th grade."
The largest grant approved this school year was for a Virtual Reality Classroom at Lansing Elementary School. "I am so grateful to the Lansing Education Foundation for supporting teachers through the Virtual Reality Classroom grant," said kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Jennah Flynn. "The opportunities to enhance lessons at all grade levels through virtual reality are endless. We can’t wait to start exploring!"
The primary goal of the Lansing Educational Foundation is to provide support to innovative learning opportunities in the Lansing School District. Since its inception in 2004, the Lansing Educational Foundation has been able to accomplish this by awarding more than $300,000 in grants and funding to the Lansing School District. LEF President Chris Aus said it is all because of the tremendous support of our community that the foundation is able to makes these grants a reality in Lansing schools. "We are so appreciative of all our donors who have supported Lansing Educational Foundation through the years. I wish all of our contributors could see the happy faces of teachers and students on our Pride Patrol each year."
