Middle School Students Experience Virtual Healthcare Career Fair Thanks to Counselor Becky Lowery
Lansing Middle School eighth-grade students recently had the opportunity to explore various healthcare careers thanks to the work of counselor, Ms. Becky Lowery. Ms. Lowery organized a Healthcare Virtual Career Fair after gauging interest from students through an application process. Fifteen students were selected to attend the fair, held on February 1, 2024, in the Lansing Middle School conference room.
The fair featured sessions on different healthcare professions such as Physical Therapy, Radiology Technologists, Nursing, and more. Students could choose which sessions to attend based on their interests.
Ms. Lowery expressed her excitement about providing this opportunity to students: "I was very excited to be able to provide the opportunity for 8th-grade students to learn about careers in the medical field. This is the first career event that I have been able to host with students. I am very excited and passionate about providing opportunities for students to learn more to be able to make good choices about their future. Today's event was a great start in this area. Students were excited and involved in the presentation, including taking notes. I was very impressed with their interest. This has encouraged me to seek out more events in this area for students."
Several students shared their thoughts on the experience as well:
"I was mostly interested in doing this because I wanted to widen my knowledge of careers that I can do. There are many jobs in the health career field, so this has been a great way for me to explore them!" - Caroline Bromell |
"At first, I was just interested in the different jobs because there are so many careers in the medical field. Now I'm learning more, and I find it so interesting!" - Myia Levario Smith |
"I mostly became interested because Mrs. Lowery showed me a lot of great stuff. My grandma is a nurse, and I love helping people, so it has been perfect for me. Mrs. Lowery is helping us explore this field!" - Kylie Wickizer |
"One thing that mostly interested me is that I have family members who have worked in the medical field, so I have always wanted to work in the field, too. I'm learning a lot about that career path!" - Jessa Garber |
The success of the Healthcare Virtual Career Fair was made possible with support from organizations like the Kansas Hospital Association, the Kansas Board of Regents, and the Kansas Department of Education.
