Dr. Penrose's "Name It, Claim It": LHS Science Teacher Josefina Gutierrez
There are incredible lessons, projects, and opportunities for students throughout Lansing High School. To share these initiatives, Dr. Penrose sends an all-staff email with pictures of an assignment, project, or activity and titles it "Name It, Claim It." The teacher responsible then replies to all staff to briefly explain what the unit is, what they are doing, and any reactions. The email allows teachers to visit other teachers' classrooms virtually and start conversations about student learning, cross-curricular activities, and differentiation.
The September 18, 2023 "Name It, Claim It" highlighted Science Teacher Josefina Gutierrez.
"This is my Environmental science class. They were tasked with creating an item that would remove oil from water to recreate an oil spill. The class was given a series of materials that included ribbon, craft sticks, foil, saran wrap, fishing line, and cotton balls.
The three most successful groups each created something unique. The first group created a type of strainer with foil. To absorb the oil, the second group used yarn to crochet a removal item. The last group found that oil bonded to ribbon. They had ribbon wrapped inside foil that was made into a funnel with craft sticks as their support. When they scooped up the water and funneled it through, only water came out the other end, and all the oil was stuck to the ribbon."
