Dr. Penrose's "Name It, Claim It": LHS Science Teacher Fred Souder
There are incredible lessons, projects, and opportunities for students throughout Lansing High School. To share these initiatives, Dr. Penrose sends an all-staff email with pictures of an assignment, project, or activity and titles it "Name It, Claim It." The teacher responsible then replies to all staff to briefly explain what the unit is, what they are doing, and any reactions. The email allows teachers to visit other teachers' classrooms virtually and start conversations about student learning, cross-curricular activities, and differentiation.
The August 23, 2023 "Name It, Claim It" highlighted Science Teacher Fred Souder:
"These are AP Physics II students working on an optics unit.
They have 4 stations around the school. Each has some equipment and instructions. At this station, they have two tasks: Determining the difference of the refraction indexes of red and green lasers through a 30-60-90 acrylic prism (should be easy for them), and determining the index of refraction of an unknown 45-45-90 prism (seems easy, but can be mathematically tricky). Hopefully this gives them a bit more experience troubleshooting and solving problems without a recipe."
