Anne Krebs, Science and Engineering Teacher
Question: How long have you worked for Lansing USD469?
Answer: Eight years
Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the role you have within the school district?
Answer: I teach Chemistry Enrichment and Advanced Placement Chemistry for the Science Department at the high school. Starting in 2019, I began teaching Engineering courses as well. This year I'm teaching Robotics and Engineering Design & Development, two of the courses in our building's Career and Technical Education Engineering Pathway. I also coach our high school Robotics Team.
Question: What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do in the school district?
Answer: Supporting students as they make connections between ideas is a big part of what brings me joy every day. That occurs in my Chemistry classes, in my Engineering classes, in CCR, in the hallway, and in Robotics Team meetings. Those connections can be small leaps in understanding or big realizations about content or possibilities. In all of my classes, but especially the Engineering classes and through the Robotics Team, I have the privilege of introducing skills, learning experiences, and career opportunities many students have never explored or did not even know existed. I try to provide learning opportunities that support my students to think and grow as individuals and learners. I am fortunate to have this opportunity to play a small role in the high school experience for every student who enters my classroom.
Question: What is something unusual about you that most people don't know?
Answer: I grew up on a farm helping bail hay and tending the family garden.
Question: When you're not working, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
Answer: reading, knitting, and crocheting
Question: Could you share a particularly heartwarming or memorable experience you've had while working with students or colleagues?
Answer: I've gotten messages from LHS graduates a few times over the past few years. It's so rewarding when I hear from a student how well they were prepared for their college program based on my course and their LHS education. Another student shared that they only pursued their current college pathway because of my classes at LHS. Those small reminders of the impact each of us has on our students are enough to fill my heart for weeks!
Question: What piece of advice would you like to offer to students to help them succeed and make the most of their educational journey?
Answer: Try it! If you're interested in a club, a course, a team - try it! Listen to your interests, not those of your friends. You may find the new opportunity becomes a passion or potential career path.
