Sixth-Graders Finish Gravity and Kinetic Energy Unit with Egg Drop Challenge
Sixth-graders at Lansing Middle School wrapped up their Gravity and Kinetic Energy Unit with an Egg Drop Challenge on November 18th. Students learned about energy transfer during collisions. Their job in the experiment was to create a device that successfully stopped an egg from breaking when dropped from a high distance.
Students had several days to use the engineering design process to design/redesign, build, and test their devices with a plastic "bean brain" before having the opportunity to retest with a real egg. Out of the 25 total eggs that were tested, students had a 48% success rate overall.
"The students were engaged through the entire process and had a lot of fun with this challenge," said Science Teacher Amanda Thomas. "It was even more fun as a teacher to see the Science classes collaborate with the ELA classes for their newspaper assignment."
