LHS Senior Pete Hamilton Collects over 1500 Items for Lion's Pantry
Lansing USD469 is incredibly proud of high school senior Pete Hamilton, who recently collected and donated 1,538 items and $465 to our Lion's Pantry housed at Lansing Middle School. He had set a goal of 1,400 based on collecting 1,350 last summer. The Lion's Pantry at Lansing Middle School has been helping families and students in our district by providing food for those in need for over ten years. Retired Principal Kerry Brungardt got the idea for the pantry in 2009. The school started seeing an increase in the number of families struggling to make ends meet due to the recession, so Mr. Brungardt went to the site council and asked for ideas on how they could lend a hand.
Pete was appreciative of the Lansing High School band who chipped in to help make the drive a tremendous success:
"A huge thank you goes to the band, the food drive wasn't going great at the beginning, and they really stepped up to help and brought in a majority of the items. The band directors were very supportive, allowing us to pie them in the face and shave Mr. Edwards' head for how much they were able to bring in. I'm really hoping to pass this on to another student next year to carry on this new tradition because I know how much it helps families in our school community."
The Lansing School District has two food pantries - the Lion's Pantry for families of middle school students and the Lansing District Food Pantry for all district families.
