March 16, 2020 5:00 pm - A message from Superintendent Dan Wessel regarding COVID-19
Just wanted to give an update to parents on the current state of Lansing School as it pertains to COVID-19. I will plan to try to send these out daily around 4:00 P.M.
The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) sent out the following statement today:
“Please be assured that Kansas State Department of Education leaders are in daily communication with the leaders of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and school superintendents as guidance regarding COVID-19 is changing rapidly. Decisions regarding the closure of schools and plans for the continuity of learning are being addressed and will be communicated as soon as additional information is available. We ask that you allow the medical and educational experts the time needed to develop coordinated, comprehensive plans to ensure for the safety and needs of all.”
There has been no determination at this time about an extended absence, but the guidance from KSDE is to prepare for a longer time out of school. It is important to know that we are required to go to school for 1116 hours in a school year. When schools talk about a waiver for the time we have to attend school, that is the number that the discussion centers around. We have meetings daily about recommendation for school closures across the state. I will update families in Lansing as soon as I have more information each day.
It is important to know that all school districts are working hard to be leaders in our communities through this situation. This includes being able to provide needed services in our community. Through a waiver from USDA, Lansing Schools should be able to continue to provide lunches for children in our schools. We are also looking at opportunities to provide additional food assistance at the same time for our Lansing School District families.
Continuation of Education is a topic at the state level, and we are looking at options as it pertains to Lansing School District. KSDE compiled a task force on Monday that will be meeting to come up with recommendations for all schools as we move forward looking to provide educational opportunities for all students in our community. They will have their recommendations to schools hopefully by Wednesday. As a part of this effort, please fill out this quick survey about access to high speed internet and access to a tablet/computer device. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1XR8cxy58B-Bu427swresUh1IN6YQwQZiuBwYLMsYdmRXlg/viewform?usp=sf_link .
Thank you for patience and understanding during these unprecedented times. Plans will be made and possibly changed the day/hour as new information comes to light.
