Lansing High School sophomore and cancer survivor, Reece Baker, inspires students at PRIDE Assemblies
Lansing Elementary and Intermediate School students had the opportunity to hear a very special guest speaker at the PRIDE assemblies on Wednesday, March 4th. Lansing High School student, Reece Baker, visited the schools to talk about her battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and how she overcame the horrible disease.
Reece was diagnosed last summer after finding a baseball sized lump in her neck and spent the beginning of the school year fighting for her life with the help of a wonderful team of doctors at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. During this time, she continued to keep up with her school work and maintained straight As at Lansing High School.
Following the PRIDE assembly theme (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diligence, and Excellence), Reece explained to the young students about how she used PRIDE to help fight the cancer. After her presentation, she allowed the students to ask questions about the experience.
One student asked if she ever wanted to give up after receiving the diagnosis. "Not one moment," answered Miss Baker. "I already knew I was going to survive because I had put that in my brain." Following questions, Reece was able to hand each student recognized for Excellence their certificate and congratulate them on their award.
Thank you for sharing your story, Reece! You are an inspiration and Lansing is proud of you!
