High School Teachers, Mrs. Bruggeman and Mrs. Krebs, participate in Research Program
Lansing High School teachers, Mrs. Anne Krebs and Mrs. Ellen Bruggeman, spent six weeks this summer participating in the University of Kansas Research Experiences for Teachers: Exploring Career Opportunities through Water-Themed Engineering Research (ECO-Water) program. The program partnered current high school teachers with college faculty and their research groups. Mrs. Bruggeman and Mrs. Krebs were able to take part in university-level research and explore STEM careers and engineering applications with a goal of bringing the experience back to the high school classroom.
Lansing High School math teacher, Mrs. Bruggeman, worked with Dr. Chris Depcik studying cooling units at power plants and Lansing High School science teacher, Mrs. Krebs, worked with Kevin Leonard, Associate Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, comparing different methods of splitting water molecules.
Both teachers learned a lot while attending the program and are excited to bring what they learned back to their classrooms. They especially enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with other STEM teachers. “We anticipated exchanging ideas, but I don't think we anticipated just how much we would appreciate it,” she said. “We don't get an opportunity to do that on a regular basis. It's very rewarding," said Mrs. Krebs.
Professors from the program will be visiting Mrs. Krebs and Mrs. Bruggeman's classroom this coming school year when they present their lessons to the students. Watch the website for updates!
The teachers attended the program from June 3 to July 12, 2019.
