A Message from Dr. Stufflebeam
Parents, Guardians, and Colleagues:
We are all hoping that winter weather is coming to an end and won’t cause us to cancel school anymore. Since we have used all of the “extra” days built into our calendar, I wanted to pass along our plans for making up any additional snow days. The principals and I have discussed several options and have tried to create a plan that focuses on educational value while also trying to take into account the inconvenience of rescheduling any plans you have made.
As I previously mentioned, adding minutes to each day has little educational value and can create daily schedule problems for families and employees. For that reason, our plan only includes adding back full school days. Here is the plan:
- If we miss school due to weather prior to March 8th, that day will be a school day.
- If we miss two more days or one day after March 8, then April 19th will be a school day.
- After that, we will add days to the end of the school year. This option will not provide educational benefit to seniors or LHS students taking AP classes, which is why this is our final option.
On a related matter, the annual “Sunny Day off School” for reaching our goal with the food drive will not occur this year since we have no days to use. At the risk of sounding naive, this creates a terrific opportunity to teach our kids about helping each other without counting the cost or counting rewards for doing so. Let’s work together to make sure Lansing is a place where the people look out for each other and where kindness to each other is considered its own reward.
Thank you for supporting Lansing USD 469 and Kansas public education. Please let me know if I can be of any service.
