"Our students have been rocking and rolling.....literally... in PE class! Throughout the month of January and into February, the 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to participate in roller skating in the gym! We provide wrist guards for safety and students are allowed to bring their own helmets, as well as a pair of skates for each student. The first thing we do is teach our students how to properly put the skates on and wear the safety equipment provided. Next we teach them how to fall, trying to maximize safety and minimize anyone getting hurt. Then the fun begins as we set up "circle skate" on the basketball court for the more advanced skaters, while the beginners are allowed to practice and get the hang of skating in the "beginner skate area", which is located along the wall. Students that are brand new to skating or a little nervous can start in the mat area that we have set up in the gym. After we get rolling with everyone we play some fun roller skating rink games such as, the Hokey Pokey and the Limbo. We also do different dance on skates such as the Cha Cha Slide and the Macarena. Our goal is to introduce our students to lifetime recreational activities that they can participate in throughout their lives to provide another option for lifetime fitness."
Mrs. Robinson is also working on a feature article for KAPERD (Kansas PE, Recreation, and Dance) Association that will be included in their spring journal. Be on the lookout for links to that on the Lansing Intermediate School webpage.
